Reading greens can be difficult for beginners to understand. It doesn’t matter how experienced your are you have to watch how the ball reacts to the different contours of the green. However there are some ways you can improve your odds.

1. Practice before you play. Take a few practice swings while on the practice greens. This can let you know what’s to come while you are out playing for real.
2. Take a squat! The only way to see the contours of the green is to be closer to it. Squat down do you can see the variations of the green. This can help you determine the distance and possible speed.
3. Take a different view. Look at your putt from the opposite side of the flagstick.
4. Pay attention! Watch your partner putt and take note of the where and how the ball breaks. If your lines are similar you can capitalize on your competitions mistakes.
5. Ask for Assistance. If you are not playing for money everybody should be out there to sharpen their skills on the links. Ask your friend, pros and caddies any questions you may have while you play.
